How to build a safe and sustainable 24/7 emergency IR service

Thursday, October 8, 2026, 17:00 – 18:00 CEST

Emergency interventional radiology (IR) plays a vital role in the management of life-threatening conditions such as major haemorrhage, trauma, and sepsis. However, providing a safe, effective, and sustainable 24/7 emergency IR service requires far more than technical expertise. Successful services depend on robust staffing models, appropriate infrastructure, efficient workflows, and seamless multidisciplinary collaboration.

This CIRSE webinar will explore the key elements of building and maintaining a round-the-clock emergency IR service. Expert speakers will discuss essential emergency IR procedures, staffing strategies, equipment requirements, damage control IR, and lessons learned from integrating IR into trauma pathways, providing practical insights for departments looking to strengthen their emergency IR service.

Learning objectives

  • Understand the organizational, structural, and staffing requirements for delivering emergency IR services on a 24/7 basis.
  • Identify the core emergency IR procedures that must be available around the clock.
  • Learn how to design effective emergency IR pathways, referral systems, and triage strategies.
  • Recognize key equipment and infrastructure needed to safely operate an emergency IR service.
  • Analyze common challenges (e.g., limited staffing, burnout, OOH gaps) and explore practical strategies to establish sustainable service models.
  • Apply the CIRSE Standards of Practice recommendations to different hospital contexts, including hub-and-spoke systems.
