Student internships: Ilan Belaid
My name is Ilan Belaid, I am a 5th-year medical student from France. Thanks to the CIRSE Student Internship Programme, I spent one month at the Interventional radiology department at the Cardarelli Hospital in Naples, under the supervision of Prof. Francesco Giurazza.
My primary goal during this international exchange was to immerse myself into the procedural practice and clinical workflow. I spent most of my time in the angio-suites, becoming familiar with sterile techniques, radiation protection protocols, and real-time imaging guidance (ultrasound, cone-beam CT, etc.).
I had the opportunity to observe a wide range of IR treatments, including oncologic – TACE and TARE procedures, embolization such as varicocele embolization and management of acute hemorrhages, and non-vascular interventions such as profound biopsies and drainage placements.
Additionally, I regularly attended the Multidisciplinary Tumour Boards (MDT) focused on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). It was enriching to see how patients were selected for TACE or TARE and how treatment decisions were made collaboratively with oncologists and surgeons.
Overall, this month provided me with a very practical overview of interventional radiology and fully confirmed my interest in pursuing a career in the field.
