Musculoskeletal embolotherapy has emerged as an innovative minimally invasive technique for the treatment of a broad spectrum of painful musculoskeletal disorders, including knee and hip osteoarthritis, frozen shoulder, and various forms of tendinopathy. Recent studies have demonstrated both the safety and effectiveness of these procedures, while emphasizing the crucial role of detailed anatomical knowledge and clearly defined embolization endpoints in achieving optimal clinical outcomes.
This year’s ESIR course offers physicians a unique opportunity to gain comprehensive theoretical and hands-on experience in the rapidly evolving field of MSK embolotherapy. Through a combination of multidisciplinary lectures, interactive case discussions, and live cases, participants will build a solid foundation that extends from basic principles to advanced practical applications.
Attendees will learn about the pathophysiology of knee and hip osteoarthritis, as well as frozen shoulder, and how these mechanisms translate into clinical symptoms. The course will address how to perform a focused clinical examination in patients with these conditions and how to integrate clinical findings with imaging. Participants will be guided through the interpretation of relevant radiological studies and will develop an in-depth understanding of the key arterial territories involved, supported by case-based anatomical reviews.
Expert faculty will present real-world cases covering genicular artery embolization (GAE), hip embolization, and shoulder embolization. They will share practical tips and tricks, discuss patient selection and procedural planning, and explain how to choose and use the appropriate materials, microwires, catheters, and different embolic agents.
Beyond technical skills, the course will also focus on practice development: what data to collect for clinical audits and research, how to structure follow-up, and what interventional radiologists need to monitor in the short and long term. The active participation of orthopaedic surgeons will foster a truly multidisciplinary environment, enabling participants to understand how MSK embolotherapy integrates into the broader therapeutic algorithm for patients with chronic musculoskeletal disease and how to position these procedures within a modern, collaborative care pathway
