CIRSE Students in 2023 – a year in rewind

December 27, 2023

The CIRSE Student Programme – Be inspIRed – educates undergraduate medical students through curated lectures and recommended hands-on device and simulator training sessions while allowing them to connect with their future IR colleagues and fellow students from Europe and beyond.

CIRSE 2023 Student Programme attracted 350 undergraduate medical students from 29 European and 15 non-European countries.

The Be inspIRed programme continued its success story and provided student participants with a unique experience and an extensive insight into the field of interventional radiology. The programme included a special “Introducing IR” lecture, 40 scientific sessions and talks recommended to students, and the highest number of hands-on device and simulation training sessions to-date. Students had a chance to attend a total number of 28 hands-on device and simulation training sessions organised by CIRSE and corporate partners.

In addition, six selected students who had successfully submitted an abstract for CIRSE 2023 were invited to present their work in the Students on Stage session. In between scientific sessions, the programme also offered engaging networking opportunities including the mentoring breakfast, student quiz and other social events.

The post-congress survey among all participating students revealed that more than 79% of participants considered IR more or much more attractive as a career choice after attending the congress. Here is how students judged their IR knowledge before (blue) and after the congress (orange):

CIRSE Student Ambassadors

In 2023, we launched the CIRSE Student Ambassador Programme which brought together students with a profound and proven interest in CIRSE and interventional radiology to promote the field. Our brilliant students organised presentations about the CIRSE Student Programme at their home universities in order to introduce their fellow medical students to CIRSE and the interventional radiology.

Alexandru Necula of the “Iuliu Hatieganu” University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Cluj-Napoca, Romania organised a presentation together with Dr Antoniu Hart-Foia and Dr. Hart.(Read more about Alexandru here.)

Saba Barbakadze and Luka Leluashvili of Tbilisi State Medical University presented the objectives of the Student Programme, opportunities for internships abroad, and the chance to attend CIRSE free of charge to their colleagues. (Read more about their internship here!)

Gökçe Aybeniz Sevim and Kamil Çağan Özdemir of Hacettepe University in Ankara, Türkiye, organised an online presentation with the help of their mentor Prof. Bora Peynircioğlu, a member of the CIRSE Online Education Committee and the head of the Interventional Radiology Department at the Hacettepe University.

Lachezar Lalov, now a resident after finishing his undergrad studies at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium, organised a presentation in collaboration with the local committee of the Belgian Medical Students’ Association (BeMSA) as a part of their “Meet Your Doctor” project. (Read more about Dr. Lalov here.)

What’s next?

ECIO 2024 is approaching and medical students are welcome to register (free of charge!) and get a sneak peek into the field of interventional oncology! Submit your abstract by January 18 to get a chance to share your work at the world’s biggest meeting for Interventional oncology!

Keep up with CIRSE Students
