Changing the status quo for the treatment of acute PE with a bloodless thrombectomy

May 14, 2024, 17:00-18:30 CEST

Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a potentially life-threatening condition that remains a major global health concern. Patients with high- and intermediate-high-risk PE often display clinical and haemodynamic instability, thus requiring rapid intervention to reduce the risk of clinical deterioration and death. In recent years, acute mortality has decreased, which is now around 8% of cases. Both the diagnosis and treatment of PE have therefore improved substantially. A prompt and better treatment can further improve immediate and long-term complications associated with PE (recurrences, bleeding with oral anticoagulant treatment, pulmonary hypertension, and psychological distress).

This CIRSE webinar conducted in collaboration with Inari Medical aims to highlight the importance of implementing patient pathways using PE decision trees. These pathways play a significant role in reducing the mortality rate. Additionally, the webinar will delve deeper into new, effective devices that affirm thrombectomy as the primary treatment for both intermediate-high and high-risk PE worldwide. With a case-based approach, the webinar will provide insights into how interventional radiologists can play a crucial role in patient selection and equip them with techniques for treating acute PE with bloodless thrombectomy.

Learning objectives

Provide interventional radiologists with a practical understanding of the following:

  1. The guidelines on catheter-directed therapies, as well as predictors for pulmonary embolism mortality and cardiogenic shock prevention.
  2. Setting up a multidisciplinary team and using pulmonary embolism decision trees for improved patient pathways.
  3. The full toolkit for bloodless thrombectomy approach; current and future clinical evidence.
  4. Patient selection, product overview, and procedure outcomes to treat acute pulmonary embolism.
