CIRSE at APSCVIR 2024

May 27, 2024

APSCVIR 2024, this year’s meeting of the Asia Pacific Society of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology, took place in Bangkok earlier this May. APSCVIR is an international organization that brings together interventional radiologists from 16 organizational members throughout the Asia Pacific region. The group meets annually.

CIRSE and APSCVIR have long enjoyed a collaborative relationship and have a good deal of membership overlap in the region. CIRSE leadership was onsite in Bangkok to participate in the meeting, speak during an “APSCVIR Meets CIRSE” session, and host a CVIR writing workshop.

APSCVIR Meets CIRSE

CIRSE President Christoph Binkert opened the session with a talk on CIRSE’s vision for IR. He introduced CIRSE to the audience, emphasising the society’s continuous growth and “three pillar” plan for the future. “We believe that IR is a full-time endeavour, not just part-time”, he stated, before explaining the pillars, which focuses on clinical service and direct patient care, then treatment and therapy, and finally on training and excellence.

After Prof. Binkert’s introduction, CIRSE Treasurer Stefan Müller-Hülsbeck gave a scientific talk on how best to treat in-stent restenosis. Prof. Binkert retook the stage to speak on double vein embolization.

Prof. Robert Morgan, who was president of CIRSE between 2018 and 2019, spoke on the ups and downs of controversies in paclitaxel and implored the community to come together in the effort to run trials big enough to avoid such confusion in the future. “I think it behoves the whole community that we come together to get the best evidence for what we do”, he said, “It’s hard, but we have to do it … it’s very important that we invest in research, and if we do research in isolation, we don’t get the numbers.”

Prof. Müller-Hülsbeck retook the stage to speak on CIRSE’s educational offerings, primarily on the benefits that EBIR certification brings. International Accreditation System for Oncology Services (IASIOS) COO, Mardis Karlsdottier, spoke to introduce IASISOS and clarify the importance of certifying expertise in cancer care via participation in the programme.

CIRSE Vice President Philippe Pereira closed out the session with a scientific talk on ablation of pulmonary metastases, and ample time for questions and answers followed.

The CVIR Writing Workshop

CVIR hosted a scientific writing workshop for the second time at APSCVIR this year.

Participants in the session gained useful tips on scientific writing from an esteemed panel of speakers with decades of experience.

CVIR Regional Editors Bien Soo Tan and Gerard Goh introduced the session before a presentation on CVIR from Editor-in-Chief Klaus Hausegger. Topics during the session included the IMRAD structure, how to respond to reviewers, and CVIR Regional Editor John Kaufman walked attendees through several dummy paper review examples.

CVIR has several events and activities planned for upcoming congresses this year. Interested parties can visit the CVIR website to learn more.

CIRSE looks forward to seeing many APSCVIR members this September at the annual meeting in Lisbon, and to traveling to Danang, Vietnam, next year for APSCVIR 2025.
