Dialysis vascular access interventions, Athens/GR, February 13-14, 2025

Worldwide, approximately four million people are receiving kidney replacement therapy, and this number is expected to increase over the next decade. Haemodialysis (HD) is the most common kidney replacement therapy, accounting for nearly 90% of all dialysis procedures. Vascular access used for HD, such as arteriovenous fistula (AVF) or grafts (AVGs), is related to fewer complications and reduced morbidity and mortality compared to central venous dialysis lines. Therefore, the physiological function of vascular access is a prerequisite for end-stage kidney disease patients undergoing HD. Complications such as circuit stenosis leading to dysfunction or eventually thrombosis are urgent situations that require immediate treatment, also compromising the longevity of the vascular access. Percutaneous, endovascular, and dialysis access treatment options, are the standard of practice as recommended by KDOQI guidelines (2019) and the ESVS guidelines (2018) for the treatment of failing and failed vascular access.

The course will include theoretical and hands-on training on a variety of percutaneous, endovascular interventions using various techniques (angioplasty, stenting, percutaneous thrombectomy, thrombolysis, volume flow-guided and IVUS-guided procedures) and numerous endovascular devices (high-pressure balloons, drug-coated balloons, cutting balloons, stents, drug-eluting stents, stent-grafts, and thrombectomy devices), used for the treatment of failing or failed dialysis vascular access (both AVF and AVGs). Presentations and hands-on workshops on minimally invasive, percutaneous, creation of arteriovenous fistula (Endo AVF), will also be available. Discussions will be also focused on the management of complications (disasters and bailouts), currently unanswered clinical, diagnostic, and treatment issues, as well as the need for future investigations.

Who should attend?

This course is designed for interventional radiologists who have completed their training and are interested in further developing their practical skills and updating their knowledge.
