This course corresponds to chapter 2.2.2.4 Gastrointestinal interventions and 2.2.2.4.2 Gastrointestinal stenting in the European Curriculum and Syllabus for Interventional Radiology.
Abstract
Gastrointestinal (GI) stenting is increasingly being used to manage upper and lower GI obstruction, both for benign and malignant aetiology, as it offers immediate relief from symptoms such as pain, dysphagia, and obstruction and improves quality of life. Several studies, including six randomized clinical trials, reported technical and clinical success ranging from 83-100% and 80-90% respectively. The median duration of stent patency was 94% at 4 weeks and 67% at 6 months, making this an effective option for treating upper and lower GI obstruction. New stent technology is promising to increase the technical success rate, improve clinical outcomes and lower complication rates. This learning module discusses various GI stenting options, including their indications, as well as technical considerations
