  1. Radiology and IR training

They must also confirm that two years of IR training have been completed or will be completed by a specified date, with at least one of those years taking place after national radiology training. Provided that all other entry criteria are fulfilled, applicants will be assigned to the first available examination session following the declared completion of their IR training.

  1. IR experience

Applicants must confirm that they have performed or will perform at least 250 IR procedures as the first operator by the time of the examination session, 150 of which were or will be interventions according to chapter 2.2.1 Vascular Diagnosis and Intervention and/or chapter 2.2.5.2 Vascular Interventional Oncology in the European Curriculum and Syllabus for Interventional Radiology. Provided that all other entry criteria are fulfilled, applicants will be assigned to the first available examination session scheduled after the required IR procedures have been performed.

  1. Curriculum Vitae

Applicants must have attended educational events in the 6 years prior to EBIR registration and have obtained at least 50 CME credits or equivalent. They must also provide a description of their medical education and previous training posts in radiology and/or IR.

  1. Memberships

Applicants are required to be:

  • Full or corresponding members of CIRSE in the year(s) of application and examination.
  • Full or corresponding members of the European Society of Radiology (ESR) in the year(s) of application and examination. An ESR membership certificate must be uploaded during the registration process (step 5).

Examination in Portuguese: applicants who wish to take the examination in Portuguese in March 2027 must be members of APRI or SOBRICE. Brazilian applicants must also be board certified in Brazil. Proof of this should be sent to [email protected] in addition to the regular application documents.

  1. Photo ID

Applicants are required to upload a scanned copy of a state issued photo ID (e.g. passport or driving license) during the registration process (step 5).

Applicants are required to provide contact details of an authorized representative, who will co-sign the application form. The authorized representative can be contacted by the EBIR Examination Services team to verify the applicant’s training and experience (point 1 and 2 of the entry criteria).

The authorized representative may be any responsible authority as listed below, provided that they have access to the applicant’s educational history and can verify the applicant‘s training and experience:

  • Head of Radiology Department
  • Hospital Director
  • IR Programme Director

The authorized representative is also required to sign off on a competency checklist, confirming that the applicant has demonstrated:

  • Commitment to patient safety.
  • Commitment to lifelong learning.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Appropriate clinical and communication skills in interventional radiology.
  • Professionalism in the workplace.
  • Necessary skills to perform key interventional procedures independently and safely.

The applicant has also the option to indicate a different authorized representative for the competency checklist; other accepted roles are fellowship supervisor and senior IR colleague.

Click on the “Apply now” button at the end of this page to begin your registration. Fill in all the requested information and submit your online form.

Please note: prepare your CME certificates to upload during the registration process! In case you did not obtain any CME credits for an educational event, you can still upload any other proof of your participation to the event (e.g., certificate of attendance, email confirming your attendance, etc.).

Upon submission of the online form, you will receive an email containing:

  • A summary with all the information submitted during the online registration, for your records.
  • A document with the relevant information, which must be shared with the authorized representative for signature. In case you chose to have a different authorized representative for the competency checklist, you will receive two different documents.

Once the document(s) has/have been signed, continue your online registration by clicking on the link you have received via email together with the documents.

You will be asked to:

  • Upload the document(s) that has/have been signed by the authorized representative(s).
  • Upload your ESR membership certificate and a scan of your photo ID.
  • Select your preferred examination language.
  • Provide the required and optional consents:
    • Applicants are required to consent to the EBIR Certifications Terms and Conditions.
    • Applicants are required to consent to participate in remotely monitored online examinations and to the transfer of personal data to Maxinity by CIRSE Society. For a full description, please click here.
    • Applicants can decide to consent that CIRSE publishes their first name, last name, city, country of residence and the fact that they passed the examination on its generally accessible website here for the duration of one year.

After completing your online registration, you will receive an email containing payment instructions. The application fee for a remote, online-proctored EBIR examination session is €900.

Once the payment has been received, your application undergoes the review process. Application review times can vary, but most candidates will be contacted within three weeks of their application being submitted.

If further information is requested, candidates can expect to wait an additional 4-6 weeks from the date of submission of the additionally requested information. Fully and correctly completed application forms are unlikely to experience this delay.

You will receive an email confirming your place in an examination session. It is now time to start using the CIRSE educational tools to prepare for the examination!

You can find all CIRSE online resources, including sample questions, here.

As an EBIR applicant, you can purchase the All-Access Pass at a strongly reduced fee. For more information, please click here.

Candidates who have not passed the examination can apply to re-take it and are permitted four attempts in total. In case you would like to apply again, please click on the “Apply now – exam retake” button below to start your registration.

Since your eligibility has already been confirmed, you would only need to upload:

  • Your ESR certificate (of the year of application).
  • Your updated educational events on this form. In case you have not attended new educational events since your previous examination attempt, and the events submitted during your previous registration are still valid, please upload the summary of your previous registration.
