Next-Generation Coil Embolisation: Techniques, Technology, and Case Insights
Coil embolisation remains a cornerstone of interventional radiology practice, with ongoing advances in technique and device design directly influencing procedural success and clinical outcomes. This webinar will review the evolving role of coil embolisation, highlighting current indications, best practices, and the technical considerations that underpin effective and durable vessel occlusion.
Through a combination of expert insight and real-world case examples, faculty will explore key procedural strategies including framing, packing, anchor-assisted techniques, and hybrid embolisation approaches. Technical factors that impact embolisation success, such as catheter access, coil selection, and occlusion strategy across a range of vascular anatomies will be emphasised.
By comparing the performance characteristics of conventional and newer coil designs, this CIRSE webinar, conducted in collaboration with Boston Scientific, aims to support informed clinical decision-making, improve workflow efficiency, and promote consistency of outcomes in everyday IR practice. It will examine the design evolution of coil systems, focusing on how next-generation platforms such as the EMBOLD™ Detachable Coil System address common procedural challenges through enhanced deliverability, controlled detachment, precise deployment, and improved packing efficiency. Case-based discussions will illustrate practical approaches to managing tortuous anatomy, high-flow vessels, and complex vasculature.
Learning objectives
- Describe the current clinical landscape of coil embolisation, including key indications, procedural strategies, and evidence-based best practices across a range of pathologies.
- Identify the technical factors that influence embolisation success, with a focus on catheter access, coil selection, and occlusion strategies tailored to vessel anatomy and flow dynamics.
- Evaluate the role of next-generation coil platforms in improving procedural efficiency, deployment stability, and durable long-term vessel occlusion.
- Apply clinical decision-making principles through real-world case examples, analysing coil performance and technique optimisation across diverse indications such as bleeding, AVMs, aneurysms, and varices.
- Recognise and address common clinical challenges encountered during embolisation procedures, including tortuous anatomy, high-flow vessels, and complex or fragile vasculature.
