Artificial intelligence and related cutting-edge technologies are increasingly being used in modern healthcare applications. AI algorithms can assist with decision-making, improving workflows, developing predictive models, providing validation, improving image quality, supporting navigation, and reducing radiation doses.
These advancements can potentially have a major impact on patient care as well as medical and economical scenarios in interventional radiology (IR). With AI holding such great potential for IR, the CIRSE leadership has recognised the need to integrate these important innovations in its projects and congresses, taking the first step with the SPHAIRE initiative, which was organised for the first time at CIRSE 2024 and has become an integral part of the annual congress.
In September 2025, the Artificial Intelligence Subcommittee (AIS) was established to provide advice and guidance to the Society on the use of AI in IR, develop the programme for SPHAIRE at the CIRSE Annual Congress, conceptualise relevant projects and research activities, and consult on other projects using AI or cutting-edge technologies.
