Endovascular treatment of acute ischaemic stroke, Maastricht/NL, December 3-4, 2026
Endovascular treatment (EVT) of acute ischaemic stroke has revolutionized the treatment paradigm and has dramatically improved outcomes for patients suffering an ischaemic stroke. Since the first trial providing evidence for EVT – the Dutch Mr Clean trial – was presented ten years ago, the treatment has been implemented worldwide, while indications have expanded in several ways since then.
Interventional radiology has become an indispensable part of the multidisciplinary treatment algorithm, and the addition of this new treatment, with its fast-changing insights and evolving techniques, to the interventional radiologist’s armamentarium makes continuous learning and training extremely valuable.
The aim of this course is to provide both the basics and the latest insights into the treatment of acute ischaemic stroke. A multidisciplinary faculty, consisting of several key opinion leaders, will discuss the different topics in an informal setting and provide participants with the opportunity to improve their skills and knowledge. Theoretical sessions will be divided into plenary sessions and deep dive sessions.
Hands-on training sessions are an important part of the course, where technical skills can be practiced on simulators and flow models. Both stroke cases and carotid artery stenting cases will be included. Faculty members will be there to support and guide participants through each step and encourage them to engage in interactive case discussions.
Covered topics:
- Introduction and background on acute ischaemic stroke
- Patient assessment and selection
- Basic and advanced imaging
- How to organize a stroke service?
- Late window and wake-up patients
- MEVO: How distal can we go, and should we do this?
- Tandem occlusions and difficult access
- Posterior circulation
- Intracranial stenting
- Complications in EVT
Who should attend?
This course is designed for interventional radiologists who have completed their radiology training and are interested in learning more about the current treatment options for routine procedures, as well as technically challenging cases.
