CIRSE Fellowship report: Dr. Andras Bibok
My name is Andras Bibok, and I am pleased to provide a summary of my recently completed CIRSE Fellowship at Antonio Cardarelli Hospital in Naples, Italy. I am delighted to report that the fellowship was highly successful, and I was able to achieve all of the learning objectives I had set out at the beginning of this journey.
During the course of the fellowship, I had the opportunity to observe a wide range of non-oncologic (and oncologic) interventional radiology procedures, gaining valuable insights into different approaches and techniques. I was not only able to watch these procedures being performed by experienced colleagues but was also given the chance to step in as a second operator in selected cases. This hands-on participation was particularly enriching as it allowed me to directly apply theoretical knowledge while further developing my practical skills in a supervised environment.
One of the key objectives of my fellowship was to deepen my understanding of liquid embolic materials and their applications in complex interventions. This goal was fully met through both clinical exposure and additional educational opportunities. A particularly notable highlight was the Guerbet glue course held in Naples during July, which I was fortunate to attend. The course provided a comprehensive overview of the properties, indications, and practical applications of liquid embolic agents, significantly strengthening my confidence in their use.
The supportive and collegial atmosphere at Antonio Cardarelli Hospital was instrumental in the success of my fellowship. I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to Professor Rafaela Niola, Head of Department, for her generous guidance and leadership. I am also deeply thankful to Dr. Francesco Giurazza, whose efforts in organizing and facilitating every aspect of my stay ensured a smooth and productive experience. Their mentorship and support played a vital role in helping me achieve my fellowship goals.
Beyond clinical training, the fellowship also allowed me to experience the workflow and organizational structure of one of Italy’s leading interventional radiology departments. Engaging with a diverse patient population and working in a multidisciplinary environment broadened my perspective on patient care and reinforced the importance of collaborative practice in achieving optimal outcomes.
In conclusion, this fellowship has been an immensely rewarding experience that has substantially enriched my professional development. I have gained not only technical knowledge and skills but also a deeper appreciation for the collaborative and innovative spirit of interventional radiology. I am eager to integrate the knowledge and techniques I acquired in Naples into my practice at home, and to share these insights with colleagues and trainees. I am grateful to CIRSE for supporting this invaluable opportunity and to the team at Antonio Cardarelli Hospital for their mentorship and hospitality.
