This course corresponds to chapter 2.2.3.5 Renal transplant interventions in the European Curriculum and Syllabus for Interventional Radiology.
Abstract
Renal transplantation has become the treatment of choice for end-stage renal disease. Complications range from minor to major, and involve non-vascular and vascular complications that occur in 12-20% of cases. Non-vascular complications include urinary tract obstruction or leakage and the development of peri-graft fluid collections such as hematoma, urinoma, abscess or lymphocele. Vascular complications comprise transplant renal artery stenosis, dissection, renal graft vascular thrombosis and arterial injuries such as arteriovenous fistula (AVF), intrarenal pseudoaneurysm, dissection and arterio-calyceal fistulas. The interventional radiologist plays a key role in management of postoperative renal transplant complications, lowering morbidity and protecting graft function.
This module gives an overview of the interventional procedures and techniques of managing different complications after renal transplantation as well as indications and contraindications of treatment. After completing this module, the reader will be able to identify these complications and choose the appropriate treatment.

- Understand the vascular and non-vascular anatomy of renal transplants and recognize possible complications
- Be able to discuss clinical and diagnostic findings in different complications after renal transplantation
- Develop ability to plan optimal management of vascular and non-vascular complications after renal transplantation
- Achieve technical competence in performing angiography and vascular interventions on transplant kidneys
- Achieve technical competence in performing non-vascular interventions after renal transplantation

Thereby, it is tailored to the European Curriculum and Syllabus for Interventional Radiology and corresponds to chapter 2.2.3.5 Renal transplant interventions.
