In memoriam – Professor Joachim Kettenbach

In late March, Prof. Joachim Kettenbach, one of the great advocates and innovators of interventional radiology, passed away at the age of 62.

In his many years heading Austria’s largest institute for diagnostic, interventional, and nuclear medicine at the Landesklinikum Wiener Neustadt,  Prof. Kettenbach was an inspiration to all who had the honour of working with him, inspiring his colleagues with his enthusiasm, passion for innovation, and commitment to advancing interventional radiology.

In a statement issued by his hospital, he was described as a person whose great skills was to create an atmosphere of visionary work while being a recognized researcher, teacher, and caring head of institute. Prof. Kettenbach was always ahead of his time, constantly thinking about how to further improve the field’s developments and create the advances of tomorrow. Even in the last few weeks of his life and despite his severe illness, it was always important to him to discuss decisions for his institute with the medical director.

Joachim’s passion for his specialty far extended Austria, his many lectures at numerous congresses making him an important member of the CIRSE family and the IR community at large.

His passionate work as a teacher keen to pass on his knowledge to future generations, was honoured in January, when he received the honorary membership of the Austrian Society of Interventional Radiology (ÖGIR) for his contributions to the society’s specialty examination as well as his work for the European Board of Interventional Radiology.

As a physician, he touched the lives of many patients, and his dedication as a researcher will ensure his work lives on forever in the improved treatments for countless patients to come.

We mourn the loss of a colleague, a scientist and a friend. Joachim will be deeply missed but will always be in our memories.
