The newly updated IR Curriculum and Syllabus is now available
As the field of interventional radiology continues to grow and evolve, CIRSE remains dedicated to supporting IRs throughout their careers by providing them with resources and educational materials that reflect the most up-to-date techniques and technologies. CIRSE’s curricula are a fundamental tool for establishing high-quality standards in the training and practice of IRs across Europe and beyond.
In December 2021, CIRSE appointed a task force to revise the European Curriculum and Syllabus for Interventional Radiology, the most comprehensive IR curriculum. It represents a standardised IR training guideline that covers the clinical and technical skills that are needed to perform safe and effective treatments. A revision is carried out every five years to reflect and incorporate the changes and developments in the field. The aim of the new revised edition is that high-quality training is available for all interventional radiologists, ensuring that they can achieve a consistent standard.
An invaluable EBIR examination preparation tool
The European Curriculum and Syllabus for Interventional Radiology serves as the blueprint for the UEMS-CESMA-endorsed European Board of Interventional Radiology (EBIR) examination. As such, it is the go-to study guide for anyone preparing for the exam.
The syllabus includes a traffic light system that represents how often a topic is tested in the examination, reflecting the overall frequency with which a treatment is carried out in Europe. This is to ensure that relevant topics are examined often while those that do not occur in everyday practice are examined less frequently.
CIRSE also offers courses that cover the entire spectrum of IR in accordance with the curriculum and syllabus via the CIRSE Academy. The CIRSE Library features an EBIR preparation section that reflects the syllabus structure and was especially designed to help candidates with their exam preparation, featuring a list of recommended lectures as well as topic packages for the specific IR topics outlined in the curriculum and syllabus.
The newly revised third edition will take effect for examinations from March 2024 onwards.
ETR approval
The revision not only ensured the contents of the curriculum and syllabus reflect state-of-the-art IR but also established the curriculum as a European Training Requirement (ETR) document. In an attempt to harmonise medical training and complement national training pathways, the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) reviews and endorses these training requirements. An ETR outlines the basic training recommendations for each medical specialty and is regularly updated. To this end, a designated ETR Structure Group was incorporated into the CIRSE Curriculum Revision Task Force.
The document was accepted by the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) Council after its submission in October 2022 and will be a strong recommendation for national medical authorities all over Europe.
CIRSE would like to thank all members of the task force for their invaluable contributions and dedication, and to congratulate them on this great achievement!
