ECIO 2024 – take a look back at the IO congress of the year!

May 10, 2024

The 2024 edition of the European Conference on Interventional Oncology (ECIO) took place in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, from April 28 – May 1, playing host to well over a thousand interventionists from around the globe.

Skys over the bay in Palma were grey on the morning of the 28th, but as friends and colleagues reunited in the congress centre for four days of knowledge exchange and networking, the mood inside was sunny.

Take a look back at the congress through the pictures and links below!

Something for every interest

The scientific programme committee, under the direction of Chairperson Prof. Laura Crocetti and Deputy Chairperson Prof. Jean Palussière, worked tirelessly to create a programme covering the ever-expanding scope of treatments that interventional oncology (IO) can offer to patients. Topic highlights this year included combination strategies for HCC, immuno-oncology, paediatric IO, the ECIO meets sessions, and a basic course on kidney and adrenal ablation.

ECIO 2024 was preceded once again by the IO Foundation Course, which took place on the day before the congress and allowed interested young interventionalists to gain a better understanding of how IO fits into the greater puzzle of cancer care.

The role of IOs in the MDT and multidisciplinary teamwork took centre stage at the meeting. ECIO met with both the European Society for Organ Transplantation (ESOT) and the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO), and a “Why an IO should be on the tumour board” series was held with subfoci on HCC, lung, renal cancer, and metastatic colorectal cancer took place.

The Collaborating Against Cancer Initiative once again allowed IOs attending ECIO to bring a tumour board colleague along to the congress free of charge in order to promote multidisciplinary collaboration and help other specialties gain a better understanding of what interventional oncologists bring to the table. In all, 33 pairs of physicians participated in the programme, bringing oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgeons, urologists, gastroenterologists, and more to participate in the meeting alongside IO and radiologists.

Hands-on training

ECIO 2024 included extensive options for attendees to gain hands-on experience in several areas. Tumour ablation sessions focused on heat-based, non-thermal, and cold-based ablation as well as on planning, robotics, monitoring and assessment for ablation. The safe sedation sessions offered both a basic and advanced sitting for sedation application during IR procedures and one session dedicated to Propofol. Radioembolization sessions were offered on dosimetry and administration systems, and two sessions were held on MSK IO interventions.

A spirit of comradery

While most scientific sessions are available to watch on demand, only in-person attendees could take advantage of the interactive activities offered on-site. Scroll through the photos below for a look back at the receptions, quizzes, competitions, meet-ups, and networking receptions at ECIO 2024.
