ECIO 2023 – a look back at the IO meeting of the year

May 16, 2023

The European Conference on Interventional Oncology (ECIO) took place this year in Stockholm, Sweden, from April 16-19.

A certain giddy post-pandemic spirit prevailed at this year’s congress, as lecture halls, at last, were full once more. Joyful reunions between friends and colleagues who were unable to travel to ECIO in Vienna last year were a welcome sight, and the feeling of forward momentum for IO as a discipline was palpable. In all, ECIO 2023 played host to 1,400+ attendees from 63 countries.

Take a look back at the congress through the pictures and links below!

Something for everyone

Scientific Programme Committee Chairperson Prof. Philippe Pereira and Deputy Chairperson Prof. Laura Crocetti were delighted to welcome delegates to a meeting covering the entire spectrum of treatments that interventional oncology can offer to patients throughout a varied and multi-faceted programme. This year’s highlights included foci on immuno-oncology, CRC, AI in IO, established and advanced indications in MSK, HCC, a basic course on the liver, and the latest data from research and clinical studies.

The Collaborating Against Cancer Initiative once again allowed IOs attending ECIO to bring a tumour board colleague along to the congress free of charge in order to promote multidisciplinary collaboration and help other specialties gain a better understanding of what IO can do. In all, 30 participants took advantage of this offer and brought along their colleagues from surgery, medical oncology, and more.

Signs of how vital collaboration is to IO were everywhere – from medical oncologist Prof. Dirk Arnold giving the honorary lecture, to a three-part series entitled “Why an IO should be on the tumour board”, to an ECIO meets ESSO session.

ECIO 2023 – take a look back!

ECIO 2023 provided a fantastic opportunity for interventional, medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists to share their experiences and discuss how to make minimally invasive cancer care available to more patients.

Lectures, sessions, and symposia from ECIO 2023 continue to be available to watch on demand at ecio2023.cirse.org.

The IO Foundation Course

After a successful first instalment at ECIO 2022, CIRSE again offered an Interventional Oncology Foundation course providing young interventionists interested in expanding their practice to include oncology treatments a first introduction to the fourth pillar of cancer care; a fantastic learning opportunity for young physicians ready to become the next generation of interventional oncologists! If you did not have the chance to attend the IO Foundation Course, you can watch it on demand via the congress platform.

Hands-on training

ECIO 2023 featured an extensive, exclusively in-person opportunity for hands-on experience in the areas of tumour ablation, radioembolization, musculoskeletal oncologic interventions, and safe sedation during IR procedures. Each session was offered several times so that participants could ensure to fit a session into their schedule.

It was so good to be together again!

While most sessions streamed live through ECIO 2023 platform, only in-person attendees could take advantage of interactive activities offered on site. Scroll through the photos below for a look through the quizzes, competitions, meetups, and networking events that took place onsite at ECIO 2023!

The European Trainee Forum, CIRSE’s network of young IRs throughout Europe, hosted a networking event on the first day of the congress.
Online Education Committee Chairpersons Profs. Dimitrios Filippiadis and Julien Garnon hosted a quiz at the CIRSE online education booth. Winner Dr. Marcin Czeczelewski received a free All-Access Pass. “I’m really happy!” he stated. “I really wanted this pass!”
In cooperation with Mentice, the European School of Interventional Radiology (ESIR) hosted a competition which allowed participants to test their transarterial chemoembolization skills through one simulated case. Congratulations to the winners!
IASIOS continues to grow exponentially! The International Accreditation System for Interventional Oncology Services hosted a cocktail reception with Steering Board members Profs. Andreas Adam and Lizbeth Kenny at ECIO 2023, allowing attendees from both current and prospective IASIOS facilities to connect, network, and enjoy a relaxed post-congress day evening together.
CIRSE’s journals were present with a booth during the congress. Profs. M. Krokidis and J. Garnon were on hand at the booth giving instant paper feedback sessions for hopeful authors. A writing workshop aimed at aiding poster and paper winners with their submissions to the Journals also took place.

See you next year!
