Abstract

An injury of a blood vessel is defined as “vascular trauma”. A primary consequence of vascular injury is haemorrhage; a secondary consequence is ischaemia. The ongoing development of endovascular equipment and techniques allows us to contribute more and more to the management of vascular trauma. Thus, IR techniques are proven to be safe and effective.

Interventional radiologists providing services for acute patients need to have the appropriate skills and knowledge to manage patients with vascular trauma. It is mandatory to have knowledge of the different ways to manage life- or organ-threatening bleeding or organ/limb-threatening ischaemia. This course provides an overview of the necessary anatomy, pathophysiology, indications, contra-indications and techniques for treatment of vascular trauma of the liver, spleen and kidneys, the pelvis, and extremities (face and neck, respectively). Information about post-procedural management and follow-up after interventions is also included.

Learning objectives

  • Understand the typical mechanism of trauma leading to vascular injuries
  • Know the typical patterns of vascular injuries
  • Know the indication for endovascular treatment of vascular injuries
  • Understand the principles of selecting an embolic agent
  • Recognise the potential role for bare and covered stents in treating traumatic vascular injuries
  • Achieve competence in the management of endovascular complications
