Abstract

Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a common disease, mostly of the elderly man, occurring in over 50% of men aged 60 years and older. After an asymptomatic period, many men consult an urologist due to lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), which include, amongst others, incomplete bladder emptying, nocturia, frequent urination, intermittency and infections.

Prostatic arterial embolisation is an effective and safe endovascular procedure that decreases the prostatic size, mainly by induced infarction of the median prostatic lobe. In contrast to surgical treatments, patients don’t face operative risks and side effects such as erectile dysfunction, retrograde ejaculation and incontinence.
