Portovenous interventions of the liver, Düsseldorf/DE, June 15-16, 2023

Portovenous interventions like TIPS (transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt) and portal vein embolisation are one of the most challenging procedures performed by interventional radiologists, both from a technical and clinical point of view. To ensure the procedure’s success, strong cooperation between interventional radiologists, gastroenterologists, hepatologists and surgeons is vital. This ESIR course will equip its participants with the necessary technical knowledge about TIPS, transjugular liver biopsy and portal vein embolisation and give them a thorough understanding of the clinical aspects involved, including indications, contraindications and managerial considerations. A select multidisciplinary faculty will provide attendees with useful knowledge from their respective fields. Course content will cover theoretical and practical knowledge with hands-on device trainings including the range of devices used for performing TIPS and portal vein embolisation procedures.

What will you learn?

  • Diagnosis of portal hypertension
  • Complications of portal hypertension: ascites and variceal bleeding
  • Patient selection for TIPS procedures
  • Management of more complex diseases: hepatorenal syndrome, Budd-Chiari syndrome, portal vein thrombosis, bilharzia
  • How to deal with portal vein cavernomatosis and occlusion
  • How to deal with TIPS occlusions
  • Post-procedural management
  • Hepatic encephalopathy: prevention and management
  • Portal vein embolisation: when and how to do it
  • Transjugular liver biopsies: when and how to do it
  • Case discussions with the experts
  • Opportunity to explore the technical characteristics of various devices with physical and electronic simulators

Who should attend?

This Fundamental Course covers basic chapters on Portal and Hepatic Venous Interventions in the European Curriculum and Syllabus for Interventional Radiology (p. 55, chapter 2.2.1.2.4). It will give participants the opportunity to learn basic knowledge but will also delve deeper into technical aspects that should be considered, such as indications, complication management, complex cases and other relevant topics.
