Course Description

This course is designed for physicians who wish to broaden their horizon in endovascular liver interventions. The course will include lectures covering liver anatomy; principles and outcomes of chemoembolisation; technique and indication of portal venous embolisation; combined radiofrequency and chemoembolisation; and radioembolisation.

Tutorials guided by teachers who will interactively discuss cases with a small group of participants will offer further opportunity for practical clinical advice and for learning the key "tips and tricks" of the techniques. The faculty is made up of well-known European experts in the field.

Programme

Segmental & Vascular Anatomy of the Liver
T. Kroencke (Berlin/DE)
• To define Couinaud’s segmental anatomy of the liver
• To become familiar with anatomy of celiac trunk, hepatic arteries, portal and systemic veins
• To understand the importance of assessing non-hepatic arteries from hepatic arteries and extrahepatic supply to the tumour

Chemoembolisation (TACE, DEB)
J.D. Meler (Dallas/US)
• To learn the indications for chemoembolisation (TACE) of HCC
• To learn the correct technique of conventional TACE with drug and lipiodol
• To review the results of conventional TACE
• To learn about new techniques such as TACE with drug-eluting beads
• To review the results of TACE with drug-eluting beads
• To discuss the contraindications and complications of TACE

Portal Venous embolisation
T. De Baere (Villejuif/FR)
• To know indications of preoperative portal vein embolisation
• To understand various technical aspects of preoperative portal vein embolisation
• To know potential advantages and disadvantages of preoperative portal vein embolisation
• To know potential anticancer therapy that can be added or must be stopped before and after preoperative portal vein embolisation
• To know predictive factor of success of preoperative portal vein embolisation

RF Ablation & TACE (Combination Therapy : RFA & TACE)
L. Crocetti (Pisa/IT)
• To understand indications, contraindications, results and limitations of radiofrequency ablation
• To learn about the synergy of radiofrequency ablation and transarterial chemoembolisation
• To appreciate the role of radiofrequency ablation and combined therapies in the therapeutic management of liver tumours

Radioembolisation

• To understand the treatment protocol
• To discuss the relevance of imaging and anatomy
• To discuss the safety and the results of radioembolisation
